IT WASN’T long before Luki’s tubes had been removed. His food and pills had stayed down, and his parts still worked—at least for basic functions. He was given his walking papers, and it was time to bid White Swan Clinic farewell. Sonny brought Luki crutches, but they were hard to use because his left leg remained nonweight-bearing, toe-touch only. Fortunately, he was still in damned good shape; his powerful arms helped a lot. And it was a short way to the front of the clinic, to the side parking lot, to the… motor home.

“You never give up, do you, Sonny?”

“I got you a ramp. I didn’t think it would be possible for you to get up those stairs.”

Luki, of course, felt obliged to say thank you instead of demand an answer to his question.

“You’re welcome. Brian’s waiting inside. He needs to talk to you, and we’re going to drop him at the airport in Yakima.” Apparently, Bear was also inside because he came bounding out and only at the last minute decided not to jump on Luki. Jackie, Josh, and Kaholo, however, didn’t have a flight until tomorrow, and Sonny’s onetime basketball coach, Jim Standing Bear, was going to put them up for the night and take them to catch their flight. So they were absent from this leave-taking.

Luki had been expecting a conversation with Brian. He’d known something was coming the minute he’d cranked his head around in the car, probably seconds before passing out, and seen Jackie jammed up under Brian’s—not Josh’s—arm. Brian had looked shell-shocked, and Luki wasn’t sure if it was from shooting the guard or Jackie’s inexplicable attachment. The two boys had only met a handful of times during the wedding preparations and aftermath. But Luki knew that in Brian’s dedication to finding Jackie over the past days, something had grown. Brian had come to know so much about Jackie, and a change had come about, subtle but strong, in the way he said Jackie’s name, in the way he talked about bringing him home.

Luki had recognized it, but what could he do? And besides, there hadn’t been any reason to try to change it. So now, when Brian sat across from him and tried to find some words to explain the letter of resignation he’d just given Luki, Luki shook his head. “Brian,” he said, “I had very little idea of who you were before this job, before we set out to find Jackie and bring him home. You’ve been resourceful, strong both physically and mentally, and basically up to every task that came your way, even volunteering things I didn’t know we needed. Jackie is safe in large part because of you. So first, as Jackie’s uncle, I give you my everlasting thanks. I’m eternally in your debt, and I’d do anything to help you if you were in trouble. Second, as your employer… well, if you change your mind and stay with Vasquez Security, or even if you take some time off—even a year, even with some pay—and then come back, I’d make you a full senior agent.
